Collaborative artwork

Thursday last week, I kicked Ryan out of the house and told him to go do boy stuff (which meant he went to hang out with his buddies and caught the midnight showing of Man of Steel) so that my best friend and I could have some girly time.

I've been thinking about getting together a group of creative women and collaborating with them on paintings, for a while. Painting for me is such a great way for me to reach spirit, or whatever you want to call it, but basically when I paint, I'm very present, I stop thinking, and my creativity soars. It's a holy experience, for lack of a better term. And I think sharing what I create and being in that kind of space with other women would be very powerful. so that's my wish.

but you always wonder if something like that would work, especially with people who have different ideas of art and their own opinions, or those who have never painted or created in this way before. How do you get them to feel comfortable enough to let loose on a canvas. How do you encourage their expression and make sure they aren't feeling overwhelmed or not into it? I don't know, so that's why I asked Arlia, who is a photographer and all around creative soul, to come over.

I pulled everything out of my studio and put it on the dining table. My studio is rather small and tucked in the corner of our guest room, so I knew we would need space.

I had explained to Arlia what we would be doing: Starting with a canvas each, we would begin painting and at some point we would swap paintings to continue the one that the other started. As I don't take things too seriously when I paint -- I know there are no mistakes and I will most likely hate a painting before I begin to really like it again -- the best thing to do when nervous for me is to just dive in. So we dove.

And when we surfaced, we had two beautiful pieces that I would be proud to display in my house.
