I've mentioned before that I had joined a talent search for the prize of talent agency representation. The due date is coming up soon, and I need to keep what I'm turning in to myself for a little while longer, I wanted to share how it's going, sans pics.
So far, I'm on my second attempt at fulfilling the brief. My first attempt will probably make it into the final blog post of this first leg of the competition because it's part of my story, my learning process. But it won't be turned in, and probably will be painted over or turned into something else entirely.
Working with a brief for writing is very similar to working with a brief for art, and my experience with advertising copy has helped me. But when I first started, I completely forgot all I had learned. It took a good friend of mine, Lee, to remind me how to get out of my ego (though she didn't call it that) and to have fun. So the first attempt and it's weird-not-quite-right energy got put away for a little while to allow for other things to happen.
And I'm VERY excited by my second go at this!
Lee and I talked about the assignment while Ryan and I were in St. Louis over the 4th of July weekend (I've been meaning to post about our trip!), and so it was only natural that I called her when I couldn't figure out while Try #1 wasn't quite working for me. With tact and gentleness she explained what was off, and then told me "Paint something for your future kids' room" (The assignment is geared towards children or childhood areas).
And BAM! Just like that I had a million ideas and I was in the flow. I stretched my work and have done things I didn't think I would be good at for this assignment. And that's what makes me so excited about it. That this is NEW, brand new and beautiful but it still has whimsy and is elegant. It doesn't scream "KIDS!" Which is great. I really think I've nailed exactly what I wanted to accomplish. I will put the finishing touches on the piece, scan it and upload it this weekend.
